On the NP-Hardness of Blocks World
نویسنده
چکیده
Blocks world (cube world) has been one of the most popular model domains in artificial intelligence search and planning. The operation and effectiveness of alternative heuristic strategies, both basic and complex, can be observed easily in this domain. We show that finding an optimal solution is NP-hard in an important variant of the domain, and po cr ular extensions. This enlarges the range of mo el domains whose complexity has been explored mathematically, and it demonstrates that the complexity of search in blocks world is on the same level as for sliding block problems, the traveling salesperson problem, binpacking problems, and the like. These results also support the practice of using blocks world as a tutorial search domain in courses on artificial intelligence, to reveal both the value and limitations of heuristic search when seeking optimal solutions.

Complexity Results for Blocks-World Planning
Although blocks-world planning is well-known, its complexity has not previously been analyzed, and different planning researchers have expressed connicting opinions about its diiculty. In this paper, we present the following results: 1. Finding optimal plans in a well-known formulation of the blocks-world planning domain is NP-hard, even if the goal state is completely speciied. 2. Classical ex...
متن کاملOn the Complexity of Blocks-World Planning
In this paper, we show that in the best-known version of the blocks world (and several related versions), planning is difficult, in the sense that finding an optimal plan is NP-hard. However, the NP-hardness is not due to deleted-condition interactions, but instead due to a situation which we call a deadlock. For problems that do not contain deadlocks, there is a simple hill-climbing strategy t...
متن کاملPushing blocks is hard
We prove NP-hardness of a wide class of pushing-block puzzles similar to the classic Sokoban, generalizing several previous results [5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 17]. The puzzles consist of unit square blocks on an integer lattice; all blocks are movable. The robot may move horizontally and vertically in order to reach a specified goal position. The puzzle variants differ in the number of blocks that the r...
متن کاملPushPush and Push-1 are NP-hard in 2D
We prove that two pushing-blocks puzzles are intractable in 2D. One of our constructions improves an earlier result that established intractability in 3D [OS99] for a puzzle inspired by the game PushPush. The second construction answers a question we raised in [DDO00] for a variant we call Push-1. Both puzzles consist of unit square blocks on an integer lattice; all blocks are movable. An agent...
